Moving can be quite a challenge, so we can be preoccupied, heedless or disorderly. All can benefit from a list when it comes to moving house.
A few helpful tips:
Notify the following of your address change:
Electoral registrar office
The post office for mail redirection
Financial institutions to transfer and close accounts
Insurance companies e.g. life insurance, car insurance, health insurance etc.
Friends and relatives
Dentist(s) and Doctor(s)
Discontinue these services:
Satellite/internet/ cable service
Discontinue these services:
Defrost your fridge/freezer and empty all water hoses
Detach your washing machine and drain water
Examine with the manufacturer to make sure all the major appliances are properly prepared for moving
Verify first that gas cylinders may be shipped to your destination and then empty them.
Ask gas and electricity companies to disconnect any supply fittings
Return videos, books etc.
Remove all the fittings and fixtures from walls
Pack important items like passports, tickets etc. in your personal luggage
Arrange for someone trusted to look after your children on the packing day as this can be quite a stressful time for them
Wash properly any items that need quarantine e.g. garden tools, golf equipment, mowers, bicycles etc.
Do not forget to list an detail any high-value items like furs, antiques, paintings etc. in your protection declaration.
Don’t put any fragile items in drawers
Don’t put liquid like sauce bottles, perfumes, etc. in drawers
Don’t overburden furniture with too many articles in drawers.
Don’t hoard perishable foods items, like cereals, flours etc.
Don’t paint or polish your furniture before the move. Polishing causes furniture to condensate after wrapping
Don’t store or transport money, tax papers, insurance policies, jewellery etc. or other high-value items with packers and movers. Keep these valuable items with you
Don’t forget to double check your home for any items the packing crew may have missed
A final look around…
Check for any items left behind in the garden, basement, garage and attic
Check for clothes in dry cleaners, shoes at repair shops, etc.
Look for gas connections, main power, water heater etc. turned off
If it is a possible turn off air conditioners and use them only when it is required during the packing because furniture kept in a cool climate may condensate when they come in contact to hot air. Allow your furniture to adapt to warmer air which makes the moisture-free transit.
Pack your bags and suitcases and move them with your valuables, tickets, passports to a trusted person. This prevents them from accidentally being moved.
Put your personal smartphones and other gadgets together and carry them with yourself so you can remain in touch with people.
